As a member of the Donor Development Staff, you work to develop members into committed, long-term donors. This development work is done on behalf of Environment California, Environment Colorado, PennEnvironment, and the state PIRGs (Public Interest Research Groups).
Your
responsibilities
The Donor Development Program is relatively new, and therefore requires you to think outside of the box, experiment with new ideas, and act quickly to incorporate successful ideas into your daily work.
More concretely, you implement & refine the tried-and-true fundraising methods developed by the Fund through 25 years of experience in canvassing and telephone outreach. And you add to that experience by proposing your own ideas for how best to develop donors, test those ideas through real-life interactions with donors, and share your experience with your director and other members of the donor team.
On any given day, you're writing letters to PIRG supporters, talking to them on the phone, and meeting with them in their homes, at their workplaces, or in their communities, building relationships and deepening their financial and political support for the organization.
Given the importance of each donor, you keep careful track of each interaction, feeding the information you compile into a larger database that allows the State Environmental Groups and PIRGs to communicate their work in the manner most appropriate to each supporter.
What we're looking for in you
We want to see if you're sufficiently bright & creative. If you're willing and able to work independently. If you have the personality, intelligence and perseverance to be a successful fundraiser. If you have the type of enthusiasm that rubs off on everyone you speak to. We'll train you on the issues, on donor development strategies, and on fundraising skills. You provide the combination of entrepreneurial spirit and social conscience required to be successful in this job.
What
you earn
In your first year, you earn $25,000 to $30,500, depending on experience. You will receive paid vacation & holiday, and you can opt into our health plan and apply for college loan assistance.
Where
you work
The Fund has open Donor Staff positions in 5 states (CA, CO, PA, MA, NJ) and Washington, D.C.

I’ve served in a number of roles for the State PIRGs and the Fund. All were great experiences and led in some way to my current position as Donor Development Associate in Oregon, working on behalf of OSPIRG. In this role, I have an incredible opportunity to be a part of a new program that is poised to make a major impact on the success of the state PIRGs in the years to come.
By building lifelong relationships with our best members, OSPIRG will be able to raise more of the money necessary to take on major threats to the public interest in Oregon. Through personal visits and other communications with donors, I have a unique opportunity to share our vision and find out more about our members than ever before. The opportunity to learn why our supporters care about the issues we work on, as well as the challenge of motivating people to give as much as they can to support our work, make donor work exciting and gratifying.
Every meeting I have with our members confirms that the work we do is highly valued. I hear ‘Thank you’ over and over again. After a meeting with a member, I received a note thanking us for our work, noting that she’d never before given a large amount of money to any organization, and that she felt good about giving it to us. Through this work I have met some amazing people who are involved in many ways in their communities. Some of them have positions that make them great coalition partners, and some have decided to volunteer with us, in addition to increasing their financial support. In every case, I know that our meeting has given them a greater understanding of our work and created a stronger relationship with our organization.
